RAS GULLA

A traditional Indian sweet

Ingredients

3 cups powdered milk

¾ cup flour

½ tsp each ground ginger, cardamom

2 tsp baking powder

2 oz butter or margarine

1 cup milk

Syrup

2 cups sugar

2 cups water

1 knob ginger, peeled and sliced

3 – 4 cardamom seeds

Oil for frying

Directions

  1. Place sugar, water, ginger and cardamom seeds in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil, stirring until sugar is dissolved.
  2. Strain the syrup and return to pan. Simmer over a low heat until ready for use.
  3. Place the powdered milk, flour, ginger, cardamom and baking powder in a bowl and stir.
  4. Add the margarine and cut into the flour.
  5. Add the milk and mix to form a firm dough. Shape dough into 1-inch balls.
  6. Heat oil over medium high heat (300F – 325F). Fry until golden brown. Drain on paper towels. 7. Add balls to the warm syrup and let soak for at lease half hour. Serve.
